Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

Water for Elephants was a book club selection for the theme of Movies. How many of you have seen the movie? I haven’t seen the movie yet. I definitely plan to see the movie in the future. When I would go to other book clubs everyone talked about this book and how great the story is about this elephant.

Story:

Jacob Jankowitz is busy finishing his last semester of college at Cornell University. One day he is called out of classes by the Dean who gives him some bad news. Unfortunately his parents had been killed in a car accident. Jacob goes home to take care of the estate. He soon finds that because this is the depression his parents don’t have any estate. Jacob is trying to decide what to do what direction to go. One day he leaves during his final exam and walks until he gets to the train tracks. A train is passing and he goes to jump the train.

The train belongs to the Benzini Brothers Circus. His train ride is almost cut short until they find out that Jacob has a valuable skill as a vet. Jacob starts working with the animals of the circus and meets Marlena and August. They work with horses and an elephant named Rosie. Jacob spends a lot of time with them, but Jacob can’t shake his feelings for Marlena. He finds himself at odds with August. How long will the ride last? Will Jacob and Marlena grow closer?

Review:

I liked this book. I would not have picked this book up on my own. I found the book easy to read and the characters likable. I can’t wait to see the movie!
