Bridesmaid Lotto by Rachel Astor


I won this book through a member giveaway on Librarything.com. I have never read an e-book before and since I have no e-reader. This book was different to read because I had to read it on my laptop in PDF format. I didn’t know what I would think of a book or if it could be enjoyable in this format.


Story:

One night Calla and Josie are sitting in front of the TV watching Emma Van Horn announce her engagement to Jake Hall’s brother. Jake is a movie star who has decided he wants to settle down and has agreed to a Bridesmaid Lotto to pick the bridesmaids. One of the lucky winners might be chosen by Jake to settle down and spend their life. Calla is excited and wants to enter the competition while Josie wants to avoid the competition all together. She may have a crush on Jake Hall but can’t see ever meeting him until her mother enters her by surprise. Josie becomes one of the participating Bridesmaids. Mattie a colleague from work helps Josie navigate the events leading up to the wedding. The paparazzi has been following the quartet faithfully and especially Josie after she wins the date with Jake Hall. 

I liked this book and would love to see another book following Josie’s new adventures. I thought the writing is great. I found the characters likable and worth fighting for in the story. 

I give this book a 3/5 hearts.

Photo by Rebecca Weiss A couple of years ago, there was a debate in the literary world about “likeable” characters.   The question, essentially, boiled down to this: must a character be unpleasant, whether angry or aggressive, selfish, or all gloom-and-doom in order to be taken seriously as a literary character?   When the debate arose, the focus was primarily on female characters— if a female protagonist has too many redeemable qualities as a person, does this detract from her substance as a character in a story?   This query nagged at me and took on a new shape during my writing Trouble the Water , as I watched my two main protagonists undergo journeys of personal growth that left them both decidedly more pleasant than the people they were when the story began.   The question I needed to answer was whether depth and meaning are negated by personal recoveries?
