C. S. Lewis has been a familiar author to me since I was little with books such as the Chronicles of Narnia. When I was in high school, I remember meeting my friends at the movie theater at Manassas Mall. The four of us were trying to decide what movie we wanted to see and we ended up picking Shadow Lands. The movie that tells the story of C.S. Lewis’s wife Joy. I did not realize there is more to the story.

”When poet and writer Joy Davidman began writing letters to C. S. Lewis—known as Jack—she was looking for spiritual answers, not love. Love, after all, wasn’t holding together her crumbling marriage. Everything about New Yorker Joy seemed ill-matched for an Oxford don and the beloved writer of Narnia, yet their minds bonded over their letters. Embarking on the adventure of her life, Joy traveled from America to England and back again, facing heartbreak and poverty, discovering friendship and faith, and against all odds, finding a love that even the threat of death couldn’t destroy.” (Amazon)
I found this story interesting. It was not what I had expected from having seen the movie. I am reminded that the Christian walk is not an easy one. Joy Lewis’s story illustrates that with all the trials that she had to go through before her story finished that God had a greater plan for her life. For me this story was hard because Joy died from Breast Cancer. Doctor’s know so much more now than what they did in Joy’s time. I feel that Joy’s character exhibited passion, strength, and grace to pursue her future. Patti Callahan Henry wrote with deep conviction and passion this story of Joy Davidman Lewis.
