Just In Time For Christmas

Thank you to Kim Boykin for sharing this holiday story with us in exchange for an honest review.  This is her short story in the Maudlin Brother series.  You can also check out other stories in this series by Kim Boykin.  What better way to share the joy of the holiday season!  Now it is time to visit Magnolia Bay!

Synopsis:

Miranda Hamilton is excited to be chairing the Magnolia Bay Holiday Festival that benefits her mother’s charity.  She finally got control of it from the two ladies who previously chaired it.  So when the mayor announces that Logan Maudlin wants to also chair the Festival and that her nemesis Pammy is included as a member of the committee?  What will Miranda do?  Will she accept Pammy’s plan for a bachelor’s auction as a part of the festivities?  Will she allow Logan to be more than a colleague?

My Thoughts:

Kim Boykin tells a great story!  It is a romance, but it happens at the holiday season.  She creates likable characters that you the reader can get behind and support such as Miranda and Logan Maudlin.  I loved the setting of the low country.  The fictious town of Magnolia Bay is described well that I would consider moving there myself.

The story was great!  I just didn’t enjoy following the romance part of the story.  It was predictable to me about what would happen next.  If you love romances then this story is for you. I did enjoy certain aspects of the story mentioned above.    I can’t wait to see what Kim shares with us next!

Would You Like a Pearl for Christmas?

Dorothea Benton Frank shares a holiday novella with us.  This novella takes place at Christmas time in Charleston South Carolina.  You are invited for a down home low country Christmas. Did you ever wish that a special person could come and help you celebrate Christmas?

Synopsis:

Theodora’s family has been for generations in one house.  The grandparents, parents and children all lived together for years.  This was how Christmas in the family was celebrated until the present.  Her children still live with her at the house, but her grandchildren are elsewhere in Charleston and Atlanta Georgia. Will they find their way home for Christmas?  The night before Christmas eve the chef who normally takes care of the family has to leave on a family emergency.  Who will take care of them over the holiday?  Enter Pearl who comes to clean up the mess that Theodora in her family, is here to the set things to right?  Can Pearl do it?

My Thoughts:

I have become a recent fan of Dorothea Benton Frank novels.  I was not as much a fan of this one.  I think I would have liked it better in full novel format.  The first part of the novel is Theodora is narrating and telling you why the family is the way that they are.  It could have been told more fully in a full novel format.  I did enjoy the character of Pearl.  We all need someone like her in our lives!

The recipes included in the story are located at the back of the novel are from the author’s background.

Here is to the next Dorothea Benton Frank novel!

You Are Invited!

You are invited to a Christmas Wedding by James Patterson and Richard DiLallo.  I couldn’t think of a better day to share it than on Christmas Day.  This story is different than what James Patterson usually writes.  Could it draw a reader in?

Synopsis:

Gabby Summerhill is getting married this Christmas.  She also would like her family to be in Stockbridge Massachusetts together.  They haven’t been together since her husband and the father of her children passed away.  So what would happen if Gabby got married but neglected to mention who she was marrying?  There are three bachelors that are up to the task, but can her family guess which one will receive the prize of marriage?  Her oldest child Claire who has a family in Myrtle Beach is struggling in her current circumstances.  Could a trip to Stockbridge Massachusetts be the key to her family’s survival?   Can Lizzie’s husband Mike who is fighting brain cancer survive until Christmas?  Will Nick get his novel published and find true happiness with his girlfriend?  Will Emily find satisfaction in her job or choose something else?

My Thoughts:

I did not know if this novel would prove to be enjoyable.  It really was a great read!  For me the storyline of Claire’s broke my heart.  I thoroughly enjoyed the character of Gabby Summerhill.  I found the video segments hilarious!  The novel is paced well!  The stories of the various family members lead up to the Wedding.  The authors did a good job of keeping us in suspense of trying to figure out who Gabby would marry?  I found the ending very satisfying and I know that you will too!

4.9/5

What Do You Want For Christmas?

Thank you to Library Thing, Random House, and Nancy Thayer for sending me a copy of Nantucket Christmas. This copy was sent to me in exchange for an honest review.  Merry Christmas from Nantucket!

Synopsis:

Sebastian and Nicole have recently married and are preparing for the holidays in Nantucket.  They are located there because of the divorce between Sebastian and his first wife Catja.  He received the house on Nantucket.  Nicole swears this will be a Christmas to remember.  Even if it means putting up with Sebastian’s daughter Kennedy, who is slightly spoiled and very pregnant.  She would like nothing better than to see her parents back together and Nicole out of the picture.  Will she find Nicole a necessary part of the holiday?  Then there is a little dog named Snicks who needs a home, but will Nicole and Sebastian’s home be it?

My Thoughts:

This is my first Nancy Thayer novel. I don’t often discuss how much I have enjoyed a Christmas novel.  This it is short but entertaining!   Also who wouldn’t love a novel set on Nantucket?  I also enjoyed reading about the festivities on the island involving the Christmas holiday.  The characters are well developed and have depth.   The surprise character for me is the dog Snicks who brought warmth to story that I did not expect.   I enjoyed the tone of the novel.

How Important is Passion?

Astonish Me!  Is the second novel by New York Times Bestselling author Maggie Shipstead.  For this novel she mostly focuses on dance; ballet to be more precise.  The Nutcracker is a famous ballet that is performed every Christmas which makes this book a perfect holiday read!

Synopsis:

Joan and Jacob have known one another since high school.  Each are equally driven by their careers. Joan pursues ballet and Jacob pursues education.  While they stay in touch by letters, Joan is happy to continue with her career until something drastic happens.  She meets world famous ballet dancer Arslan and has a relationship with him.  Is there a future or will she turn to her old friend Jacob? Joan becomes pregnant and produces a son  Harry.   He becomes friends with his neighbor Chloe and wants a relationship.  Will dance help  him pursue both Chloe and his future?  What happens when the truth comes out about Harry’s real father?

My Thoughts:

I love dance!  It is my favorite form of exercise.  I liked Astonish Me! By Maggie Shipstead.  The novel didn’t keep my interest throughout.   The book was researched well.  I read that the author spent time in Paris researching the subject of ballet.  Many authors use various forms of the internet for research as well.  The plot is character driven and told by the many characters in the novel.

It asks the question do you have what it takes to pursue your passion?
